Organic is a great concept and all, but let’s face it—it’s stinkin’ expensive! Can I get a witness??
But every now and then, I come across a product that’s comparably priced—like the organic carrots at Kroger. They’re basically the same price as pesticide carrots, so they’re on my shopping list now.
Same with Zaycon chicken. Zaycon sells organic, fresh meat by the case and delivers it to local communities. Last Saturday, I picked up 40 lbs of chicken breasts from the back of a truck in a church parking lot. I placed my order last month, splitting the case with a friend. We each paid $35.
Easy as pie.
Each massive breast is now individually wrapped and in a zip-top bag in my freezer. It’s enough to last us all winter. And it’s organic!!
On top of that, during pick-up I provided my usually sedate husband with the year’s most entertaining moment. I went to move the van’s sun visor out of the way and conked myself on the forehead with it.
I’ve spent years telling him funny stories, trying to get more than a tight-lipped, toothless smile out of him to no avail. Then I bang myself in the forehead, and he throws his head back and belly laughs. What’s wrong with this picture?! :-) Despite being laughed at for my “Three Stooges Moment” (as he coined it), his laughter made me laugh, which made me cry, which made Zaycon Chicken Day eternally memorable.
Organic Chicken doesn’t get much better than that.

ReplyDeleteSweet, Jess! Where's the nearest delivery? The first time we did this, it was 2 hr away in Atlanta. Yuck, but it worked out that one of us girls that was buying together was going to be driving through Atl anyway, so it worked out well. Was SO GLAD they came to our town this time!!
