Like the rest of Americans with 9-11, every Lost enthusiast remembers where he was when he saw his first episode. I was sitting in front of the computer (Yes, we used to download tv shows. Don't you judge us!) in our house in Schonenberg-Kubelberg, Germany. I watched the first episode just a few weeks after it aired. Unlike Hubby who took a few episodes to really appreciate it, for me, it was love at first sight.
We've been following the show since our six year old was born. But last night (sniffle, sniffle) we put that baby to bed for good. The 2.5 hour series finale made for an exciting evening, although it left me a bit disappointed. (spoiler alert!!) I need sunshine and rainbows, not death and a contrived heaven. I'd held out hope that they'd somehow merge the island life with the flash sideways and everyone would LIVE happily every after.
But I gotta hand it to the writers. The know how to weave a good story. Makes me tremble in awe. As a writer, I can't help but wonder what kind of organization they used to keep it all twists and turns straight in their minds. A tower of legal pads? Different colored post-it notes? I bet they had a better system than my own. :-)
So, where were you when you first saw Lost and what was your first impression? Did you love how they wrapped it up, or were you disappointed too?

It was a lazy weekend in Germany.I may have been sick, I think, because we didn't go to church. Nothing on AFN but sports and I wasn't in control of the remote anyway. My close friend(coffee)drinking buddy, and Navy diver wife, Angie had sent me the LOST Season One for Christmas. Having been living in Germany almost a year by then, I had no clue what the show even was. So, it sat unopened for a few months, until that Saturday. After reading the back cover of the package, I figured the show was filmed in Hawaii which is why Ange sent it to me. We had been co-workers at Lanakila Baptist Christian School, island-hopping travel friends, Sunday eat-out-with-the-family friends, and Hawaiian Kona coffee lovers. We used to patrol Haliewa Beach on the North Shore hoping for a glimpse of the BayWatch cast. She and I shared the same love of "the island" and neither wanted to leave when our PCS came. That's why she sent me LOST. So, I watched. I thought it'd be great seeing Hawaii again. And then I got hooked. I watched episode after episode that weekend, until I ran out of weekend. It's been a challenge keeping up with it because of being overseas. While in Germany, we'd borrow copies sent to friends from their families from the States until it ran on AFN. Here in the UK, we were able to watch it more regularly on SKY. However, we missed that all too fateful finale. SKY aired it at 5 am yesterday and we forgot to set our SKY recorder. It's set to rebroadcast tonight. I have already scoured reviews online. I have no problem knowing what's gonna happen. I am one of those people who have no qualms flipping to the last page of a book to read how it ends. I like having that knowledge as I read the book. It helps me understand what I'm reading/seeing as I go along. I already have mixed emotions about what we're gonna see. I am not happy that it's such a complicated ending. But, on the other hand, I'm not happy that it's such a simple ending for such a complicated story. I do know one thing for sure, I am in awe of the writers who can, as April discussed, keep this all straight in their heads. They had been giving us clues all along. This is the kind of show that sharpens your mental skills as you try to decide what to remember and what to discard. As for my poor teenage daughter, Caroline, I am afraid she's going to be severely disappointed. She lives for Friday nights and LOST. I am sure she will have more feelings and opinions about the contrived heaven ending than I do. After a few days of sack-cloth and ashes, she start watching from season one, I'm sure, whilst she counts down the days until the release of the final season on DVD. -- submitted by Penny
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story Penny! At the risk of offending you for forgetting, do we know each other? I knew a Penny in Germany but if she ended up in the UK, I'm unaware of it.
ReplyDeleteI plan to watch from season one too! Hubby deploys in July, so that's my part of my coping plan. :)
I'm with you on wishing the "sideways" had been reality, especially when they started finding each other. I pretty much never cry at TV or movies, but that made me SO teary. Oddly enough, it was the Sayid/Shannon one that hit me hardest. Maybe because I never really followed the show that much after the first season? It was on while my husband watched it, but I was usually doing something else. It just got too creepy for me to pay heavy attention to. I always felt sucker punched after I watched it. :-) After a day or two to reflect, I thought they did as good a job as they could have, especially after I read someone's theory that Hurley and Ben DID "captain" the island together up to the end, and that the flash sideways was Hurley's gift to them, so they could all find each other and happiness before the end. (They based that on him telling Ben he was a good number two before he headed into the church.) I thought that was a neat idea, especially as sweet as Hurley was.
